
[DEMO] Water-efficient drip basics for island farms
Practical drip checks, mulching, and scheduling ideas for plots that depend on rainwater tanks and limited groundwater.
Island farms rarely have spare water. Rain tanks fill fast after a squall and empty just as fast under midday sun. A drip line that leaks, clogs, or runs too long wastes the same water you need for the next dry spell.
Start with the layout, not the timer
Run one main line along each bed and place emitters near the root zone — usually one emitter per plant for cucumber and chilli, closer spacing for leafy greens. Keep laterals short enough that pressure stays even from the first plant to the last. On sandy coastal soil, water moves down quickly; shorter, more frequent pulses usually beat one long soak.
A morning checklist that catches most losses
Walk the system before the heat builds.
- Open the flush end of each lateral for a few seconds — cloudy water means grit is building up.
- Feel a few emitters: dry spots next to wet ones often mean a clogged dripper.
- Check connectors and the filter housing for wet rings in the sand.
- Look at tank level and note how much you used yesterday; sudden jumps usually mean a leak.
Mulch and shade do half the work
Palm fronds, dried leaves, or commercial mulch cut surface evaporation and keep roots cooler. Combined with 30–50% shade net over sensitive beds, you can often reduce run time without starving the crop. Lift mulch occasionally to check for snails and fungal patches.
Schedule for weather, not habit
On bright, windy days plants drink more; after overnight rain, skip or shorten the morning cycle. If leaves wilt only at noon but recover by evening, the crop may need shade or mulch more than extra water. Persistent limp leaves in the morning usually mean the root zone is dry or salty — dig a small hole and check before adding fertiliser.
When to call for help
